New Interdepartmental Building at the UIB Campus, Palma de Mallorca

The shape and the location of the building arise from the urban planning that rules the University Campus. The rotundity of the volume is fragmented at the corner, providing the necessary pedestrian permeability required by this strategic site, in the form of a porch. From the existing paths a natural access to the center is enabled, which is part of the usual route of the campus: walking, resting, understanding the environment from the access. A traversable exterior vestibule resolves the connection between the two buildings.

The building is conceived as an efficient container for teaching spaces, with classrooms, laboratories and departments. The compactness of the floor plan, the systematization of the envelope and energy efficiency are key elements in the environmental approach. With an efficient energy production system, connected to the Districlima of the campus, and a rigorous control of energy losses from the standardization and composition of the facade, the building effectively meets energy standards.

A university center is designed with the highest levels of comfort (visual, hygrothermal and acoustic), in a privileged, luminous environment, with ample spaces that guarantee adequate working conditions.

The distribution of the program establishes a stratification of uses by levels that allows us to segregate the activities from greater to lesser flow of people as we gain height, ensuring the optimal functioning of the center.
