New Hospital of Intermediate Care in Felanitx, Mallorca
1st PRIZE Competition
The project approach aims to give value to the environment where the new building is located for the construction of the new Intermediate Care Hospital of Felanitx, SA MOLA DE FELANITX, a quality green area where it will be proposed to promote the richness of relationships in fluid spaces and visuals to a unique landscape place.
There is an attitude of environmental concern from the first approaches, an attitude of respect for the site, a place with its own identity, with Mediterranean light and vegetation. From the existing paths, there is a natural access to the center; walking, resting, understanding the site and the building from the access. The idea is to enhance the existing paths and resolve the access to the new building with an outdoor space as a porch.
Taking into account the current situation of austerity and necessary efficiency, we would not understand the approach of a project with excessive formal expectations that would be totally dispensable. For us it is important to guarantee that the building can be completed within the planned budget, with 0% deviations and investing a significant budget item in the interior; in the acoustic quality of the spaces, the climatic and environmental quality of the user, in state-of-the-art sanitary equipment necessary for a state-of-the-art sanitary building. This is possible if we carry out an exercise of containment and a rigorous control of the project’s expenses.
The building is strictly adapted to the specific regulations of the Urban Plan in its volume, position on the site and eligible areas. It is important to allow the new building to adapt to the topography; thus, on the first floor the occupation is lower and allows visual continuity towards the interior of the green area. The first floor is understood as a continuity, in treatment and material, of the existing margins.
A compact volumetry of two floors and four bars is proposed in the perpendicular trace to the topography, which allows the appearance of courtyards or plant axes that improve the lighting, ventilation and privacy of the rooms, as well as the visual continuity with the area of Sa Mola.
The accesses are part of the landscape response of the complex, a Mediterranean garden will allow parking and will be the natural continuation of the plant axes that run through the courtyards of the building. Special care has been taken in this project in the integration of the building with the environment, considering in its design the microclimatic aspects, local biodiversity and naturalization.
